In the days from 16. 11 to 20. 11. 2015 We attended the fifth Congreso Internacional Tropical Animal Production at the Palacio de Convenciones de la Habana, where we presented our successful breeding of the critically endangered crocodile species. We would like to thank to the Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in Prague, Mr. Gustavo Suarez Angel Cordero for a recommendation of our participation.
As part of the path to the congress we visited the world famous farm - Criadero de Cocodrilos en Zapata, where they have conservation projects for Cuban crocodile. We could discuss with the workers in the farm and we could share our experience of breeding of crocodiles. We acquainted with the intentions of saving of this critically endangered species. Workers and scientists are doing research of genetics and morphology types Cuban crocodiles on the farm.
Our Cuban colleagues had thesis from Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia in the Czech Budejovice, one's disposal before our arrival. This work was for them very interested and the scientific team could to compare with the latest findings from the analysis of DNA processed by crocodiles in Cuba. The results of these tests will be decisive for our future cooperation zoo with conservation projects of critically endangered crocodile in Cuba.
During the excursion to the National Park Cienaga de Zapata, we visited place where Cuban crocodile is found in the wild and from our guides receive information about its current status. Cuban crocodile is strictly protected, and its status in the wild will rise in the future likely reintroduction of captive breeding. We hope that in this process we will actively involved.
On 4th – 6th of May we were breeding sixteen crocodile´s babies of gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). It is first rearing in Europe and at the same time is first rearing outside the tropics.
Crocodile Zoo Protivín has great success with breeding endangered and critically endangered crocodile species. The first in Europe Zoo has bred a Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) in homozygous form a Mugger crocodile (Crocodilus palustris).
