Chvalsiny Crocodile Farm

The Chvalsiny crocodile farm has been in operation since 2000 and came into existence with the support of the Zoo operator’s agricultural company. It is actually the oldest crocodile farm in Eastern Europe. Indeed, since the beginning of the farm, any acquired crocodiles have been centred here; where any animal species was bred to reach independence, they had been grouped by breed. In 2005 Cuban crocodiles (Crocodylus rhombifer) reproduced successfully for the first time here. They were genetically pure (homozygous genotypes) animals; hence, it was the first documented reproduction of captive-bred homozygous Cuban crocodiles in Europe.

Nowadays the farm serves as a facility of the Protivin Zoo, comprising breeding, raising, separate and quarantine terrariums built in two property structures, which are located 1 kilometre apart from each other, hence, their operation fully conforms to veterinary regulations. The total area of the crocodile sanctuary is now 800 m2 and other premises are continuously being developed.
